Congress leader and Lok Sabha Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to announce an immediate Special Relief Package for states reeling under devastating floods caused by incessant rainfall.

Taking to X, Gandhi described the situation in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttarakhand as “extremely worrying.” He stressed that thousands of families are struggling to safeguard their homes, livelihoods, and loved ones, and said the Centre’s urgent intervention was vital.

“I urge that an immediate announcement be made for a special relief package, especially for the farmers, and that relief and rescue operations be expedited,” Gandhi posted.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for multiple districts across Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.

Jammu & Kashmir’s Reasi district recorded the highest rainfall at 230.5 mm, with several regions such as Katra, Doda, and Batote also reporting severe downpours. In Punjab, districts including Ludhiana, Jalandhar, and Sangrur remain on high alert, while Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi, Solan, and Una have been similarly flagged.

The rising Yamuna River in Delhi has also crossed the danger mark of 205.33 metres, prompting precautionary evacuations in low-lying areas such as Mayur Vihar Phase-1.

Rescue agencies continue operations across the affected regions as states brace for more rainfall.
